What Google Knows About Your Web Optimization

In order to have any search engine rankings, the search engines must know about your web site first. What do all the search engines know about your web site? Here is a quick way to find out. Go to Google and type in the search box:

site:www.YourDomainName.com

If Google hasn’t indexed your site, it will return a message, “Your search – site:www.YourDomainName.com – did not match any documents.” If you have a new web site, it is likely you will see this message. However, if your web site has been around for months or years, seeing this message means that Google hasn’t found your web site yet, or something is preventing Google from indexing your web pages.

Make It Easier for Google to Index Your Web Site

If Google doesn’t have any of your web pages stored in its database, your web site will not be found in its search results. Google and all other search engines allow submissions of new web sites. After a web site is submitted, Google uses software robots to “crawl” the web site. During this process, Google crawlers or spiders sort through the code of the web pages and extract the content that is readable by its crawlers. The extracted content will then be stored in Google’s database. Please be aware that sometimes what is readable to human visitors can’t be read by search engines. Web sites that can’t be easily read by search engine crawlers need to be modified or rebuilt.

If Google has indexed your web site, it will list all the pages it has in its database. If you don’t see all your web pages listed by Google, don’t panic. Google may not have enough time to find your pages if your web site is new, or have not updated its database fast enough to include them. You can wait a week or two and check the indexed pages again.

Another reason why web pages are not included in Google’s index is that Google’s spider has a difficult time finding the web pages while crawling through your site. Some web sites do not have a well-designed navigation structure that guides search engine spiders to various sections or pages of the web site. Not having a well-designed navigation structure is like building a highway without exit signs. To make it easy for search engines to navigate through your web site, ou can either re-design your navigation or create a good sitemap that enables spiders to find all pages.

Avoid Flash Web Site

Some web sites appear to have more than one page since you can navigate from page to page. However, it is not uncommon for Google to display only one or two pages for the entire site. If this happens to your web site, chances are your web site is designed and built with Flash.

Search engines do NOT understand what is inside a Flash file. A Flash-based web site can have 100s of web pages, but it only appears as one page to Google. Flash animations can be very useful in creating nice effects for web sites. However, creating a web site entirely with a single Flash causes serious problems for search engine optimization. Web sites built entirely on Flash CAN’T be optimized for search engine rankings unless the web site is completely redesigned.
